Interview
Who is John Q?
Haha I always answer these questions as "I’m just me"
When did you begin your journey to work in music?
Unofficially at 14 (2004) years old, Officially at 16 (2006) years old, because this is when I started mixing, rapping, and recording. around this time I started running like a little home studio.
You manage iMarkkeyz, the viral internet remix producer responsible for Coronavirus ft. Cardi B, and Lose Yo Job. How did that come about?
It’s a funny story because we have been friends for about 5 years or so, and he kept telling me I would be a good manager, and he kept asking me to just be his manager (For about 2 years). Then one day we were talking and he asked me again and I was just like "okay fine ill do it" and literally like 6-8 months later the Coronavirus song is created and things really start escalating after that. It’s been a lot of fun and a great learning experience, I'm happy for the opportunity, it’s been a wild ride and I look forward to the future and what’s to come.
You also co-run the Orlando-based music collective/label, 'All My Homies,' with a lot of talented producers and artists, what should we expect from the label in 2021?
The Producers and artists are currently working on music and releasing music regularly. You should expect releases, of course, Merch, our weekly events & Live streams, live concerts, and shows. More weekly content releasing on our social media and Youtube. New Originals music and Remixes releasing, New features and talent added to the team. AMH Athletics releasing more content and just so much more. Keep it locked by following us at @allmyhomies on IG
What has been your most memorable moment as a DJ?
Man, Probably Opening up for Masego and Goldlink, Or Doing my weekly Set at my event called C.U. Thursday in Downtown Orlando. The Energy is always crazy and I love reading the crowd and just figuring out what the fuck will work this week.
Who are your musical influences? (Old and New)
Missy Elliot, Bizzy Bone, Jay Z, Kaytranada, Kendrick Lamar, Jay Dilla, Flying Lotus, Thundercat, The list goes on and on! it all depends on my vibes.
Do you do anything else for work besides music?
Yes kinda, I'm a College Professor, but I teach "Digital Audio Workstations" (Protools) and studio recording lab. I also work as an Audio and light technician at clubs and concert venues. I say kinda because I consider all my work to be inside the music industry in one way or another.
What are you currently working on?
Currently working on building my 2 weekly events "C.U. Thursday" and "B-nice on Sundays" as well as managing Imarkkeyz and E.clips3, and doing the standard duties of running a Record label / Publishing Company. Also building my consulting business (www.consultqna.com) and the corresponding Livestream every Wednesday "Free Music Reviews (W/ JohnQ & Alex A). I’m looking at a UK tour in the fall but that's not completely solidified yet, I will FOR SURE be in the UK during the fall though lol. I’m also a professor at Valencia College in Orlando Florida, so that's a constant grind. Man, there's just a lot of stuff some things are too fresh and I’m not ready to talk about yet.
How do you find new music?
I’m a SoundCloud digging Veteran :-)
Who is a new artist you discovered recently that you want everyone to listen to?
I discovered.... well found Nardo wick about 2 or 3 months ago and I really dig his music. I play 2 of his songs at the end of the mix.
What's your current DJ setup and why?
Im a Traktor DJ, I use the Traktor Kontrol S4 MK3, the reason why I use Traktor is for all the FX's and Remix capabilities. It allows me to have my freestyle-ish DJ Style. I’ve never prepared and Traktor gives me the ability to create loops and loop backward on the fly if I like something I just heard while DJing. It’s a lot of fun and something I can not do with Serato, Rekordbox, or Virtual DJ.
What vibe are you going for with this mix?
Oh man to be transparent and honest. I did this mix of Djing live in a club. it was my opening Set on 6.17.2021 haha. I like to go all over the world and just play a variety of vibes, your gonna legit get some flavor from the south, Africa, jersey, top 40, old SoundCloud, new SoundCloud, and some other stuff. It’s a Journey, and it's always Nothing but the Vibes.
What advice would you give to aspiring artists/DJs/Producers out there?
Learn the basics of audio and your equipment, that goes for anyone in any field in music, CHECK YOUR EGO all the time. Let yourself be teachable. learn when to shut up... Spread love, good vibes, and good energy.
